Eyes Examination

Eyes examination is important to maintain our eyes’ health. The sequence of an eye exam varies from doctor to doctor. Most ask first about our general health, specific eye problems, and activities that affect vision. The doctor will note our eyes’ overall condition, check their movement, and test the pupil’s reaction to light. The lids, tear duct, and eye exteriors are examined with a slit-lamp microscope. This device is also used to evaluate the clarity of the cornea and lens and the condition of the iris.

To test visual acuity, or sharpness of vision, we will be asked to read a standard eye chart (called as Snellen’s chart). If we need corrective lenses, the doctor will have us look though lenses of different strengths, either in special trial glasses or in a device called a phoropter or refractor.

To examine the retina and capillaries, the doctor uses an ophthalmoscope, an instrument that both lights up an eye’s interior and gives a magnified view of it. To get a better view, the doctor may use drops to dilate the pupils.

To test for glaucoma, the doctor uses a tonometer, a device with a plunger or a pressure probe, which when applied briefly to the surface of the eye measures the pressure within it (some tonometers measure eye pressure with a puff of air). Before the test, the doctor applies a drop of a quick-acting anesthetic to each eye. Depending on or specific eye problems and risk factors, peripheral vision, depth perception, near vision, or color vision may also be treated.
