Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition that causes changes in the way the colon contracts. Certain parts of the bowel contract too quickly, and others too slowly, causing ‘spastic’ movement that accounts for the condition’s other names, spastic colon and spastic colitis. Symptoms include constipation alternating with diarrhea and abdominal cramps and bloating. Because it involves muscle disturbance rather than inflammation or tissue damage, irritable bowel syndrome is a much less serious condition than inflammatory bowel disease.
Doctors term irritable bowel syndromea functional disorder rather than organic disease because no signs of disease show on X-rays or other diagnostic tests. Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome is usually made only after X-rays, endoscopy, and fecal analysis have ruled out cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other possible causes for patient’s symptoms.

There is no link between irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease, that is, irritable bowel syndrome will not progress to become ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, nor will it lead to cancer.
