Total hip and total knee replacement operations, greatly improved in recent years, offer pain relief and restored mobility to hundreds of thousands of American arthritis sufferers each year. Prosthetic devices –made of biocompatible metal and plastic- mimic the action of the natural hip and knee; they create stable, pain-free joints with a useful range of motion for more than 90 percent of patients. A recipient is able, after healing and physical therapy, to walk, climb stairs, swim, and possibly even ride a bicycle or play golf with an artificial hip or knee.
Joint Replacement Surgery
Loosening of the artificial joint components after 5 years or more is still the greatest problem. Most artificial joints are cemented to natural bone. If the bond gives way, the joint must be recemented in a second operation. Better cements and an alternative method of fusing artificial joints to bones without cement are being tested.
Joint replacement is not recommended for everyone. People under 50, for instance, may retain more use of their joints with less aggressive treatment. Because hips and knees are weight-bearing joints, obese people are not good candidates for replacements, nor are patients unwilling to exercise surrounding muscles.
