When cancer surgery involves certain parts of the body –the face or the breasts, for instance, -it can be disfiguring. To help alleviate a patient’s fears about how he or she will look, a plastic surgeon is often consulted before the first operation. Just discussing the possibility of reconstructive surgery may be helpful in reassuring patients. In some cases, depending on the woman’s age and condition, reconstructive breast surgery can be scheduled immediately after a mastectomy. Otherwise, the reconstruction may be done after a convalescence of several months.
Reconstructive Surgery
The silicone implants used in many breast reconstructive may cause scarring and are suspected of increasing the risk of cancer and autoimmune disease. An alternative technique called pedicle flap surgery is more difficult and time-consuming but creates a viable, living breast. In this operation, a flap of skin and other tissue is taken from the patient’s abdomen to form the new breast mound (flaps can also be taken from the thighs and buttocks).
Although the abdomen is left with a scar, the patient gets a free ‘tummy tuck’ in the process. Such reconstructive surgery is expensive, but unlike cosmetic surgery, it is usually covered in part or completely by major medical insurance.
